408 Public Notices

04-0455, Port of Lake Charles proposes to dredge Berth 8 in Contraband Bayou, Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Published Sept. 30, 2016

The proposed project is to deepen 307,200 square feet (7 acres) of the existing commercial channel in Contraband Bayou from its existing depth of -35.2 feet Mean Low Gulf (MLG) to -40 feet MLG, plus 2 feet advanced maintenance, plus 2 feet of allowable overdepth to be consistent with the adjoining Calcasieu River and Pass Federal navigation channel depth.  The request also includes periodic maintenance dredging.  Only the portion of the channel identified “DU2” in attached drawing is covered by this request.  The remainder of the channel would continue to be maintained at currently permitted depths.  The proposed action would result in excavating approximately 81,000 cubic yards of new work dredged material and 80,000 cubic yards of maintenance material over a 10 year period.  Dredged material is proposed to be placed into the existing USACE Disposal Area 3.  However, the material could also be placed in Disposal Areas 1 or 2 based on availability.  Recent sediment sampling performed by the requestor’s engineering team indicates the sediment meets relevant sediment quality guidelines for disposal into these areas.
