NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District and its contractor, B&K Construction, will temporarily close a section of River Road and a section of the Mississippi River levee bike path, for the installation of discharge tubes. Work is part of the Southeast Louisiana Drainage Project (SELA), Harahan Pump to the River, Discharge Basin Project.
River Road will be closed from Hickory Avenue to Evans Road in order for discharged tubes to be installed. The tubes will also go over the Mississippi River levee, which will cause the Mississippi River Bike path to also be closed.
Closures on River Road will tentatively begin Wednesday, July 9, 2014. The Mississippi River bike path will close Monday, July 14, 2014. Closures will last approximately four months.
Eastbound River Road traffic will be rerouted onto Hickory Avenue northbound (left) to Jefferson Highway. To return to River Road, traffic will be directed to turn right onto Evans Road and then left onto River Road.
Westbound River Road traffic will be rerouted onto Evans Road northbound (right) to Jefferson Highway. To return to River Road, traffic will be directed to turn left onto Hickory Avenue and then right onto River Road.
Businesses along River Road will be allowed access during construction.
Throughout Construction the Corps continues to work closely with its partners at Jefferson Parish. The Public Information Department for Jefferson Parish will send out a media advisory and post signs on River Road about the closure.
