Flood control project awarded in Jefferson Parish

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District recently awarded a contract to replace the westbound bridge on West Metairie Avenue at Soniat Canal in Jefferson Parish. The work is a part of the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project (SELA).

The $8.1 million contract was awarded to Shavers-Whittle Construction LLC, from Mandeville, LA. and is expected to be complete in August 2015. A temporary westbound bridge will be built at the Soniat Canal location. Once complete the current westbound West Metairie Avenue bridge will be demolished and replaced with a new structure. The temporary bridge will be demolished and canal bank work will be completed.

The Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project reduces the risk of flood damages due to rainfall flooding in Orleans, Jefferson and St. Tammany Parishes.
