Corps of Engineers to open several hurricane risk reduction structures

Published Oct. 6, 2013

NEW ORLEANS, LA – As Tropical Storm Karen no longer poses a threat to the area and water levels subside, the Corps will begin opening major structures of the Greater New Orleans Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS).  Openings are conducted in accordance with the water control manual for each structure and in coordination with our partners and stakeholders.  Major structures will continue to be opened until all required openings are complete.

The following structures are now open:

Inner Harbor Navigation Canal-Lake Borgne Surge Barrier: GIWW Sector Gate and Bayou Bienvenue Lift Gate (The Corps anticipates opening the Barge Gate on Monday, Oct. 7th)

    Seabrook Floodgate Complex

Public safety is the Corps number one priority as we continue to respond to Tropical Storm Karen and prepare the levee system for the next tropical event.
