NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District Commander,
Col. Alvin B. Lee, signed the Decision Record on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 for the proposed
action for Bayou Dupre, following a 30-day public review period.
The proposed flood control structure consists of a new sector gate which is now at an
elevation of 31.5 feet and floodwall tie-ins to the proposed T-walls that would be
constructed adjacent to the existing structure.
“The new structure at Bayou Dupre will be nearly twice as high as the existing structure,”
said Chris Gilmore, Corps senior project manager. “This will be a significant increase in
risk-reduction for the citizens of St. Bernard Parish.”
Individual Environmental Report (IER) 8 titled “Lake Pontchartrain and Vicinity, Bayou
Dupre Control Structure, St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana,” addressed the potential human and
environmental impacts associated with the proposed replacement of the flood control
structure on Bayou Dupre. The structure is located the on the south bank of the Mississippi
River Gulf Outlet in the northwest portion of St. Bernard Parish. The project would reduce
the impacts from a storm surge event that has a one percent chance of occurring in any
given year.
The next steps toward building the projects in IER 8 are to finalize the project designs and
to obtain rights of entry for construction. Construction will begin in early 2010.
Alternative arrangements allow the Corps to expedite the environmental process required
of all federally-funded projects while fully complying with the intent of the National
Environmental Policy Act. IER documents are available on
