Corps awards condominium demolition contract near 17th Street Canal

Published Sept. 16, 2009
NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $497,000 contract recently to Garner Services, LLC, a New Orleans-based company, for demolition of 14 residential units in the Mariner’s Cove subdivision adjacent to the 17th Street Outfall Canal Interim Control Structure (ICS). The work will expand the area needed for ongoing use of the ICS.
The demolition of the Mariner’s Cove condominiums is not associated with eventual construction of the Permanent Canal Closures & Pump Stations. Property owners have been compensated in accordance with all federal laws and regulations. Demolition is scheduled to begin next month.
Our contractors will carry out this work safely while minimizing impacts to nearby structures. Citizens should remain clear of the demolition area and allow the contractors to work without interruption.
The interim control structures at the three outfall canals reduce the impacts from a storm surge event that has a one percent chance of occurring in any given year.
