Corps releases environmental document on risk reduction for Westwego to Harvey project

Published Dec. 1, 2009
Supplemental document outlines proposed plan available for public review
NEW ORLEANS, LA – The Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District is currently accepting comments on the draft Individual Environmental Report Supplemental 14.a titled “West Bank and Vicinity, Westwego to Harvey Levee, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana,” through Dec. 15, 2009. The document describes the impacts that construction of improved earthen levees and floodwalls along the Westwego to Harvey stretch of the Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System may generate.
This supplemental environmental document addresses the proposed project revisions to the original IER #14, Westwego to Harvey project alignment, and evaluates the potential impacts associated with the changes. Project changes include a proposed flood side shift of approximately 3 miles of earthen levees, and proposed revisions to fronting protection and floodwall alignments at the Ames and Mount Kennedy Pumping Stations.
Once complete, this project would reduce the impacts of a storm surge event that has a one percent chance of occurring in any given year.
