Harvey Canal gates open

Published Dec. 13, 2009

NEW ORLEANS – The Harvey Canal gates were opened around 6:30 a.m. today after heavy rain and winds subsided, decreasing water levels in the Harvey Canal.

The gates had been closed around 9:00 p.m. yesterday.

Once closed, we began pumping water from the canal into the lake. A three-person team located at the structure is responsible for operating the gates and pumps.

We worked closely with the Jefferson Parish Drainage Department to maximize their drainage capacity while ensuring public safety.
