NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently awarded a $17.3 million contract to storm proof eight pump stations in Jefferson Parish so that they can remain operable during and immediately following tropical storm events.
The contract was awarded to Louisiana-based firm Benetect L.L.C. on Dec. 24 for modifications to the following pump stations: Cataouatche #1, Cataouatche #2, Estelle #2, Hero #1, Hero #2, Planters #1, Planters #2 and Westwego #2.
“This is a great step forward in our continuing efforts to reduce risk in Jefferson Parish,” said John Ashley, branch chief for existing pump stations. “We will work closely with our non-Federal partners to complete this project.”
Work consists of upgrading and reinforcing buildings, elevating electrical equipment, as well as establishing backup power and fuel sources. The contract duration is 16 months from the date of notice to proceed, which should be issued within the next couple of weeks.
