Meeting slated for Thursday, Feb. 4 at Visitation of Our Lady School
NEW ORLEANS, LA –The Corps is hosting a public meeting on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010 at Visitation of Our Lady School, 3520 Ames Blvd., in Marrero to discuss the proposed refinements to the Harvey to Westwego Levee project.
The refinements made to the Corps’ previously approved plan are described in draft Individual Environmental Report Supplemental 14.a titled "West Bank and Vicinity, Westwego to Harvey Levee, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana," which was released for public review in November 2009. The comment period for IERS 14.a has been extended and will close at midnight on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010.
The proposed changes include the shift of an earthen levee approximately 40 ft into a portion of property that was recently transferred from the Corps to the National Park Service to become part of the Jean Lafitte National Historic Park and Preserve. The Corps and the National Park Service are currently coordinating to determine what portion of the property would be needed for hurricane risk reduction. The shift would stretch a total of approximately 3 miles, and a little less than one mile of the shift would be in park lands. The Corps would require new Right-of-Way and materials to construct the wider, stronger earthen levee. The supplemental environmental document also outlines proposed revisions to the fronting protection and floodwall alignments at the Ames and Mt. Kennedy Pumping Stations in Marrero.
This public meeting is being held by request, per the National Environmental Policy Act alternative arrangements.
