NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently awarded a $3.4 million contract to Garner Services, LLC, a New Orleans-based service disabled veteran-owned small business, for construction at the CSX Railroad Crossing in New Orleans East. Public safety is the Corps’ top priority and the project will reduce impacts from a 100-year storm surge event, which has a one percent chance of occurring in any given year.
The contract calls for constructing a new floodgate at the CSX Railroad Crossing, as well as a new floodwall alignment to elevation 27.5 feet. Construction activity is expected to begin within weeks.
“We are excited to get started on another key project that will reduce the risk of hurricane storm surge for New Orleans East,” said Col. Sinkler, commander of the Hurricane Protection Office. “We are also pleased to award this contract to a New Orleans-based small business.”
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reached the $2 Billion mark in small business prime construction contract awards for the Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS) on April 15. Added Sinkler, “It is important in this current economic environment that we do what we can to help small businesses continue to grow.”
