NEW ORLEANS, LA - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, in partnership with the Louisiana Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration, is hosting a neighborhood focus meeting to discuss alternatives under consideration for the proposed Small Diversion at Convent/Blind River in St. James Parish. The diversion would provide additional freshwater, nutrients, and fine sediments from the Mississippi River to the Maurepas Swamp and its surrounding areas. This project is part of the Louisiana Coastal Area Plan (LCA Plan).
"This meeting will provide a venue for community members to learn more about the proposed Convent/Blind River Freshwater Diversion. Citizens will have a chance to learn about benefits and impacts anticipated by its construction and operation," said Jammie Favorite, OCPR project manager.
The meeting presentation will cover all alternatives considered in the planning of the freshwater diversion to benefit the Maurepas Swamp, with a focus on the tentatively proposed diversion location.
The LCA Plan, and the recommended projects contained within it, are the culmination of the Louisiana Coastal Area Ecosystem Study, which was initiated in 2001 and is jointly managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the State of Louisiana to address the state's severe coastal land-loss problems.
