Public to comment on “Convey Atchafalaya River Water to Northern Terrebonne Marshes” feasibility study

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), in partnership with the state of Louisiana’s Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration (OCPR), is hosting a series of public meetings to gather input on the feasibility studies for near-term critical restoration projects identified in the Louisiana Coastal Area Ecosystem Restoration Plan (LCA Plan).

The second of two public meetings to discuss the LCA “Convey Atchafalaya River Water to Northern Terrebonne Marshes & Multipurpose Operation of the Houma Navigation Canal Lock” feasibility study will be held Thursday, June 17 at the Morgan City Auditorium, 728 Myrtle St.

The goal of this project is to reduce the current trend of degradation of the Terrebonne Marshes by providing additional freshwater, nutrients, and fine sediment to the area.

The tentatively selected plan consists of increasing freshwater flows and associated nutrients into the project area. The proposed action would involve the construction of 56 structures and other water management features, and the beneficial operation of the Houma Navigation Lock complex, in an effort to address the declining health of the Terrebonne Marshes ecosystem.

The public meeting will discuss the current status of the feasibility study, the next steps for the study, and provide community members with a venue to ask questions about the project. Subject matter experts will be available to discuss results of the investigation into water flow management and the re-distribution of freshwater within the Terrebonne Marshes. The Corps and state project team held scoping meetings for this study in February 2009.
