NEW ORLEANS—The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District awarded a $928,000 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act contract for the improvement of Pump Station No. 1 to Central Plant Sanitary Sewer System near West Roosevelt Street in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA.

The contract was awarded Tuesday, June 22nd to Garner Services, LLC, a service disabled veteran owned contracting and construction firm located in New Orleans, LA.

This environmental infrastructure project consists of constructing the replacement of a portion of a sewer force main. The replacement will be an integral piece to East Baton Rouge Parish’s Sanitary Sewer Overflow Corrective Action Plan.

“The direct benefit of constructing this component of the sewer removal system will be that the current, as well as future, residents of the area will be provided with a sanitary sewer system that will be able to handle their sewer disposal needs more efficiently and without the health concerns of system deficiencies,” said Chad Chauvin, project manager for the New Orleans District. “Additionally, this modification enables the installation of a new storm box culvert intended to reduce sanitary sewer overflows.”

In the project partnership agreement, the Corps and the City of Baton Rouge/Parish of East Baton Rouge agreed to a 75/25 cost share. The federal portion of this cost share is primarily funded by the ARRA appropriations act.

President Barack Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 on February 17, 2009. The legislation is intended to stimulate recovery of the U.S. economy. The act appropriates $4.6 billion for the Corps’ Civil Works Program. Funding provided in the Recovery Act enables the Corps to provide lasting value for the nation by addressing much needed infrastructure improvements in both water resources and military construction. To date, the New Orleans District has awarded 136 contracts under the ARRA/Stimulus program.
