NEW ORLEANS – On October 1, 2010, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans District began preparations to place revetments along Mississippi River banks.
Due to channel currents and turbulent waters that are associated with river flood stages, river embankments naturally erode. To both fight erosion and ensure that the river stays in the desired alignment revetments are used to stabilize river banks.
Typically a process known as mat sinking is employed, in which concrete mats are placed along riverbanks to form a protective overcoat.
The New Orleans District constructs revetments annually, at the beginning of the Mississippi River’s low water season by placing concrete mats along river banks.
Revetment construction started at the beginning of October, and is expected to last through the beginning of December.
