NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently awarded a contract to storm proof the Harvey Pump Station on the West Bank of Jefferson Parish so that it can remain functional during tropical weather events.

The $2.2 million contract was awarded to the New Orleans-based, 8(a) MATOC joint venture of Allen Wright Enterprises, Inc. / Hamp’s Construction, L.L.C. The pump station is located on the west side of the Harvey Canal between the West Bank Expressway and Lapalco Boulevard. The Harvey Pump Station is integral in providing drainage and flood risk reduction to Marrero, La.

Storm proofing measures include strengthening walls, strengthening and / or replacing roofs, installing new doors and windows, adding a back-up house generator and miscellaneous electrical and mechanical work. The notice to proceed will be issued in the next week and work will take approximately seven months to complete.

“We continue to work diligently to storm proof key pump stations in the greater New Orleans drainage network,” said Col. Robert Sinkler, commander of the Corps’ Hurricane Protection Office. “We now have only two planned storm proofing contracts left to award, and we intend to advertise and award them by this time next month.”
