The National Hurricane Center has issued advisories on Tropical Storm Lee located approximately 210 miles southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River.
In support of our emergency response plan, the Corps is alerting our emergency command posts, including stationing local government liaisons (LGLs) within affected coastal parishes for redundant communications. Currently, LGLs are stationed in Orleans and Lafourche parishes. The Corps will continue to deploy more LGLs as requested. We are working closely with our partners at the state and parish levels and are ready to operate structures as necessary.
Company Canal gates closing
Southern winds have pushed water into the C ompany Canal, prompting the Southeast Levee Flood Protection Authority – West to request New Orleans District assistance in closing the canal gate.
The gate takes approximately one hour to close and, once closed, the levee authority can begin pumping water around the gate, should the need arise, to maintain a safe water elevation of 3 feet in the canal.
The Corps of Engineers is working closely with SLFPA-West to increase public safety to local homes and businesses.
We are also closely monitoring the Harvey Canal water levels and will close the gates if necessary.
