Corps awards West Bank Jefferson Parish interior drainage contract

Published July 9, 2012

NEW ORLEANS -The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District recently awarded a contract to provide increased drainage for the Industry Canal area on the west bank of Jefferson Parish.  The contract, which is part of the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Damage Reduction Project (SELA), will reduce the risk of damages from a 10-year rainfall event which equates to approximately 9 inches of rain over a 24-hour period for this area.

On July 5, the Corps awarded an $18.6 million contract to Louisiana-based Fleming Construction Co., LLC.  The 36-month contract calls for removing three existing underground drainage pipes and replacing them with an approximately 3,000 linear foot reinfor ced concrete open channel between the Oakwood Canal and Algiers Outfall Canal just east of the intersection of Belle Chase Highway and Lapalco Boulevard.  The Industry Canal project area is noted on the below map; a notice to proceed will be issued this week and construction will be completed in the summer of 2015.

The Corps will continue to work closely with its partners at the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority and Jefferson Parish on the SELA program.  To date, a total of 51 SELA contracts have been awarded in Jefferson Parish, with work completed on 44 of those projects.  All scheduled SELA work in Jefferson Parish should be finished in 2017.
