New Orleans – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, recently awarded a contract for test section work on the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain (WSLP) Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction project. This work will support the construction of approximately 17.5 miles of levee system that will provide 100-year level storm surge risk reduction to the area extending from Bonnet Carrė spillway to Garyville.

The $3,640,190.42 firm-fixed-price contract was recently awarded to Quality First Construction, of Covington, Louisiana. Work will be performed in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana.

Bradley Drouant, Sr. Project Manager, said “these test sections, built along the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain levee alignment in the marsh, will provide important information on what materials and means and methods will best equip us to deliver this incredibly important project for the residents of St. John the Baptist and St. James Parishes.  While this work is ongoing, we are continuing to advance the designs of the levees and our partners at Pontchartrain Levee District and CPRA continue to acquire necessary Rights-of-Way so that additional levee construction can begin this Spring.”

The West Shore Lake Pontchartrain project will achieve 100-year storm surge risk reduction by a variety of structural and non-structural features to include: levees, floodwalls, and pumps. While these features will reduce risk from storm surge associated with tropical events, they do not specifically reduce risk of flooding from significant rainfall. The project design team continues to work with the Non-Federal sponsor to acquire Rights of Entry (ROE) and coordinate with utilities and pipelines within the project footprint. Three contracts are underway stockpiling clay and sand for use in levee construction. Access road construction contract was awarded in August 2021. Levee construction is set to begin midyear 2022.
