Corps awards contracts for green space restoration on Louisiana and Jefferson avenues

Work related to the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project (SELA)

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District recently awarded contracts in Uptown New Orleans to restore green space that was removed to construct the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project (SELA). The $574,496 contract for Louisiana Avenue was awarded to Tarpan Construction, LLC. and the $747,298 contract for Jefferson Avenue was awarded to Jemison & Partners INC.

Work on Louisiana Avenue consists of planting approximately 80 trees along the neutral ground from S. Claiborne Avenue to Constance Street. Tree varieties include Crape Myrtle Tuscarora, Crape Myrtle Muskogee, Magnolia Alta, Sweet Bay Magnolia, Savannah Holly, and one live oak.

Work on Jefferson Avenue consists of planting approximately 160 trees along the neutral ground from S. Claiborne Avenue to Magazine Street. Tree varieties include Crape Myrtle Tuscarora, Magnolia D.D. Blanchard, Savannah Holly, and a palm variety.

The tree palette was selected based on input received from the public, the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, the city of New Orleans Department of Public Works, the state of Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, the Louisiana State Historic Preservation Office, and the city of New Orleans Department of Parks and Parkways who will be responsible for maintenance after work is compete.

Work is scheduled to begin in March and take approximately four to six months to complete.

Traffic Impacts: On Louisiana Avenue, the contractor will close the left travel lane as needed for planting. At least one travel lane will remain open in each direction. On Jefferson Avenue, the contractor will close the river bound travel lane as needed, no more than two to four blocks at time. All travel lanes will be reopened after work in complete each day.

Contracts for S.Claiborne and Napoleon avenues are expected to be awarded in fall 2019.
