Construction gaps to be closed on Peoples Avenue Canal
Work related to the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project (SELA)
NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, will close gaps on the Peoples Avenue Canal which were placed temporarily for work related to the Southeast Louisiana Flood Control Project (SELA). Two approximately 70 foot sections of sheet pile along the top of the canal were removed in advance of upcoming construction to connect new box culverts along Treasure and Benefit streets to the Peoples Avenue Canal.
These gaps were open during the New Orleans rain event on Saturday, Aug. 5th. The Corps is assessing any impacts these openings had on flooding in this area. If any residents along the construction site believe their property was damaged they should contact the Corps’ Construction Hotline at (877) 427-0345.
Work is underway to temporarily close these gaps with an earthen berm. This work will be followed by a more robust approach, such as HESCO baskets, to restore pre-construction levels of flood risk reduction along the canal when not under immediate construction.
