Bayou Sorrel Lock closes today

Published May 23, 2011

NEW ORLEANS, LA – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed the Bayou Sorrel Lock to navigation this morning due to high water resulting from the Mississippi River flood.

Once the gage on the lock’s flood side reaches 16.0 feet, the lock closes to maintain structural integrity and prevent any potential damage to both the gates and machinery. As of this morning, the flood side gage was at 16.1 feet.

The lock will re-open once the lock’s flood side gage reaches 15.9 feet and is predicted to continue falling.
