NEW ORLEANS, LA – The Corps is hosting a public meeting on Tuesday, July 27, at Bayou Barriere Golf Clubhouse, 7427 Hwy 23, in Belle Chasse, to provide an update on the status of construction projects along the length of the Algiers Canal in Orleans and Plaquemines parishes. The meeting will focus on the anticipated construction impacts of building gates at the entrance and exit of the Belle Chasse Tunnel. The purpose of the gates is to reduce risk of a storm surge event that has a one percent chance of occurring each year.
“We’re currently working on several risk reduction projects along the Algiers Canal,” said Ted Carr, project manager. “In November we will also begin building risk reduction measures at the entrance and exit of the Belle Chasse Tunnel. This meeting will let community members know how the construction may impact them.”
Construction of these risk reduction features will generate traffic impacts. The meeting presentation will provide information on how construction of the Greater New Orleans Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System may impact residents.
