London Avenue Canal gates open as water levels subside

NEW ORLEANS – As a result of water levels subsiding in Lake Pontchartrain and the London Avenue Canal, Col. Ed Fleming, New Orleans District commander, ordered the canal gates opened at 7:00 am on Tuesday September 6, 2011.

The gates at the London Ave. Canal are opened when water levels in the canal subside below 2.5 feet and are predicted to remain below that level. The gates take about 50 minutes to open.

The gates at the London Ave. Canal were closed on Friday, September 2nd at 4:30 p.m.&nbs p;At peak, all 20 pumps were pumping 5,200 cubic feet per second of water from the canal.

The Corps’ pumps at the London Ave. Canal have a maximum combined capacity of approximately 5,200 cubic feet per second.
