NEW ORLEANS – In collaboration with our partners at Jefferson Parish and the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority – West (SLFPA-W) the Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District closed the Harvey Canal gates at approximately 8:30 this morning.
The gates took about 8-10 minutes to close. A three person team located at the structure is responsible for operating the gates and pumps.
The Corps’ pumps at the Harvey Canal currently have a maximum combined capacity of approximately 450 cubic feet per second.
We work closely with Jefferson Parish and SLFPA-W to maximize drainage capacity and reduce the risk of flooding.
