LOCATION OF WORK: The project would affect waters of the United States and navigable waters of the United States associated with the Calcasieu River Ship Channel and the Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge. At Latitude 29.806184 and Longitude -93.311227; in Cameron, Cameron Parish, Louisiana.

PROJECT PURPOSE:

Basic: Channel maintenance and marsh creation.

Overall: Calcasieu Pass Channel maintenance and marsh creation for the enhancement of the Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The permittee received an original authorization to dredge approximately 1,162,967 cubic yards of native material from the Calcasieu River Loop Pass with an additional 4,776 cubic yards of material to be brought in as fill in Cameron, Louisiana. The dredged material is being beneficially used for marsh creation within the Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge. The marsh creation area totals 261acres (155 acres of open water and 106 acres of existing marsh). A 30-inch-diameter slurry line transports the material from the dredge location to the refuge.

On Augst 13, 2025, a USACE Emergency Approval and an EUA 25-031 by the LA Department of Conservation and Energy was issued for conducting emergency actions, dredging, and fill placement associated with an inadvertent spillage of dredge material while constructing the originally authorized beneficial use of dredged material (BUDM) disposal site. Approximately 232,000 cubic yards of additional material will be excavated and placed on site. The remaining 110,000 cubic yards of material within the Calcasieu River Loop Pass will be placed within a second BUDM location within the refuge. To date, most all of the site and affected waters have been restored to preproject conditions, contours, and depths, with the spilled material being transferred to the BUDM designated areas.
