Corps offers preview of 17th PCCP construction progress to media

Permanent Canal Closures & Pumps (PCCP)

What:  Media are invited to observe construction of the Permanent Canal Closures & Pumps (PCCP) site at the 17th Street Canal from the Interim Closure Structure. Current construction activities include pile driving, placement of rock slope protection around the bypass gate structure, sand push across the canal channel, installation of hydraulic piping on bypass gate structure, installation of reinforcing steel on the west floodwall and installation of the open cell cofferdam.

Who: LTC Austin Appleton, Deputy Commander for the New Orleans District, will be available for the tour and follow on interviews.

Note to Media: Participants must comply with the following dress code:
• Long Pants
• Short-Sleeve Shirts - No tank tops, no muscle shirts.
• Non-Skid Shoes - No open toes, no sandals, no high heels.

: The Corps awarded the approximately $615 million contract to construct Permanent Canal Closures & Pumps (PCCP) at the mouths of the 17th Street, Orleans Avenue and London Avenue outfall canals on April 17, 2013 to PCCP Constructors JV.  The PCCP will provide a permanent and more sustainable measure for reducing the risk of a 100-year level storm surge entering the outfall canals.  The Interim Closure Structures (ICS) will continue to provide 100-year levels of storm surge risk reduction until the PCCP are constructed and commissioned in 2017.
