District commander signs decision records

NEW ORLEANS – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District Commander Col.
Alvin Lee signed the decision records for proposed actions in New Orleans East, following
a 30-day public comment period for each document.

The levee, floodwall, ramp and floodgate projects discussed within Individual
Environmental Reports (IER) 6 & 7 will reduce impacts to communities in New Orleans
East from a storm surge event that has a one percent chance of occurring in any given year.

The actions for IER 6, titled “Lake Pontchartrain and Vicinity New Orleans East Citrus
Lakefront Levee, Orleans Parish,” will increase the height of structures to elevation 13.5 to
15.5 feet to meet the 100-year level of risk reduction. The actions for IER 7, titled “Lake
Pontchartrain and Vicinity, New Orleans East Lakefront to Michoud Canal, Orleans
Parish,” will increase the height of structures to elevation 17 to 34 feet to meet the 100-year
level of risk reduction.

The next steps consist of finalizing project designs and obtaining rights of entry for
construction. Construction on all remaining projects in New Orleans East will begin in
early 2010.
Alternative arrangements allow the Corps to expedite the environmental process required
of all federally-funded projects while fully complying with the intent of the National
Environmental Policy Act. IER documents are available on www.nolaenvironmental.gov.
