New Orleans –A contractor dredge for the US Army Corps of Engineers struck a gas pipeline while working in the Atchafalaya Bar Channel resulting in an explosion and fire just before 8 a.m. today.

“I am directing a safety stand down immediately and will be opening a Commander's Investigation regarding the incident,” said New Orleans District Commander Col. Alvin Lee. A safety stand down generally means a halt to all ongoing work while the incident and safety procedures are reviewed.

The contractor and Coast Guard officials arrived on site to further assess damage. Initial reports indicate there is no environmental damage. The Corps is continuing to investigate this incident and will provide updates as information becomes available.

As a result of the incident three individuals were slightly injured. They were examined and released to return for work.
