Upcoming closure of Lakeshore Drive near Robert E. Lee Boulevard and Lake Marina Ave

Published Sept. 22, 2011

NEW ORLEANS – Because of ongoing construction, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, with its partners at the City of New Orleans, the Orleans Levee District and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, will temporarily close Lakeshore Drive between Robert E. Lee Boulevard and an area just north of Lake Marina Avenue to all traffic on Friday, September 23 and Monday, September 26, 2011. The closure will last from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on both days.

Traffic will be able to use Canal Boulevard to get to and from the lake. In addition, commuters will be able to access Lake Marina Avenue and West End Park by heading westbound on Hammond Highway and turning north onto Regent Street.

This closure is part of construction efforts associated with the greater New Orleans Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS). An approximately 16-foot-high floodgate was installed in May 2011 and currently provides the 100-year level of risk reduction; however, this road closure (illustrated on the map below) is necessary to ensure safety of the public as construction of the floodwalls that tie into the gate are completed. Future road closures at or near this location may be necessary as the Corps completes construction.
