NEW ORLEANS -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, recently awarded a contract for the construction of a levee, floodwall, and gate, as part of the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain (WSLP) Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction project. WSLP contract 103a will build a flood wall and levee and will be approximately 0.15 miles of the 18.5-mile levee system, which will provide 100-year level storm risk reduction for areas in St. John the Baptist, St. James, and St. Charles Parishes.
The contract was awarded on July 9, 2026, to B&K Construction Company LLC, of Mandeville, LA. The contract at award is $11,839,945.00. Work will be performed in St. John the Baptist Parish.
“The construction of these features will bring us closer to delivering essential flood risk reduction for the residents and businesses in the area,” stated Col. The West Shore Lake Pontchartrain project will achieve 100-year storm surge risk reduction in St. John the Baptist and St. Charles parishes by a variety of structural and non-structural features to include: levees, floodwalls, and pumps. While these features will reduce risk from storm surge associated with tropical events, they do not specifically reduce risk of flooding from significant rainfall.
