NEW ORLEANS -- The southbound lane of Indiana Street between Seine Street to General de Gaulle Drive in New Orleans, La, will be closed to traffic beginning Monday, June 8, 2026, to support construction activities associated with the federally funded Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project (SELA).
The temporary street closure is necessary to allow continued progress on drainage improvements in the area. Construction activities on Indiana Street will be conducted in phases and completed block by block to minimize disruptions and maintain efficient progress throughout the project area. The contractor will provide temporary access to homes during the southbound lane closure along Indiana Street.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) anticipates reopening the roadway by June 30, 2026.
Motorists and residents are encouraged to plan alternate routes and allow additional travel time while construction is underway.
The SELA project reduces the risk of flood damages due to rainfall flooding in Orleans, Jefferson and St. Tammany parishes. The improvements generally support the parishes’ master drainage plans and provide flood risk reduction up to a level associated with a 10-year rainfall event. A 10-year rainfall event is a rainstorm that has a 10% annual probability of occurrence and equates to approximately nine inches of rain over a 24-hour period for our area.
