The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is requesting public comments for construction of breakwaters seaward of Grand Isle, La., in Jefferson Parish.

A draft Environmental Assessment (EA) prepared by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, titled “Grand Isle and Vicinity Louisiana Beach Erosion and Hurricane Project PL 84-99”, and associated draft Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) and appendices is available for public review and comment for seven business days from Feb. 12, 2026, to Feb. 20, 2026.

The purpose of the draft EA’s proposed action is to improve the performance and longevity of the Grand Isle and Vicinity Project’s dunes and beach, ultimately reducing the scope of future repairs following high- and low-frequency storm events.

The proposed action involves construction of up to 35 segmented stone breakwaters and up to 20 navigational light platforms. The breakwaters would be constructed within 400 feet of the shore of Grand Isle, La., in an existing 16,000-foot gap between the eastern and western breakwater fields. Each segmented breakwater would be approximately 250 feet long with a maximum width of 65 feet. The resulting breakwaters would be approximately four to six feet from the seafloor and three to five feet above the water surface, depending on water level.

All comments received by the end of the public comment period will be considered in finalizing this EA. Public comments received, and responses, will be included in the final EA. Comments should be mailed to the attention of:

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Regional Planning and Environment Division, South
New Orleans Environmental Branch, CEMVN PDS

7400 Leake Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana 70118
