In December 1996, several homes were found to be contaminated with the pesticide Methyl Parathion. These homes were located in New Orleans, Houma, Amite, Ponchatoula, Baton Rouge, Alexandria, and Shreveport. The contamination was a result of the misuse of the pesticide by exterminators and residents. The sources of this pesticide vary from multiple exterminators to home owner purchases from flea markets, parking lots, grocery stores, and door to door salesmen. Methyl Parathion is a commonly used agriculture pesticide. When it is misused inside homes it does not breakdown and remains toxic causing several adverse health effects.
