Maintenance Dredging Program

LOCATION: New Orleans District

PROJECT FACTS:

  • The ports located on the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge to the Head of Passes make up the largest port complex in the world.
  • The New Orleans District performs approximately 1/3 of the total maintenance dredging for the Corps of Engineers.
  • We have the largest dredging program in the Corps.
  • Average Annual Maintenance Dredging Program (FY 95 - FY 99) - $83.5 million; 83.4 million cubic yards.
  • Dredging on the Mississippi River alone is approximately 50% of the total funds expended on maintenance dredging.
  • There are 2800 miles of authorized project channels in the District. Of these 2400 miles are shallow draft and 400 miles are deep draft.
  • There are 5200 miles of navigable waterways in the District.
  • There is more specific information regarding dredging activities available under Operations Division.

PROJECT COSTS:

  • Average Annual Total Operations & Maintenance, General Program (FY 95 - FY 99) - $127.1 million. Dredging is approximately 66% of the total program.
