Lock replacement will not widen canal
Recent media reports are inaccurate

PRESS ADVISORY:
This is a media advisory only

NEW ORLEANS --

NEW ORLEANS - In response to recent inaccurate media reports, the Corps of Engineers' proposed replacement of the navigation lock in New Orleans does NOT include widening the Industrial Canal.

The Industrial Canal has 690 feet between the centerlines of the east and west levees. This would not be changed. The lock's width would be increased by 47 percent to 110 feet, still a small portion of the canal's width. At 1,200 feet, the replacement lock would be just under twice as long as the present one.

No homes would be displaced by the replacement lock. For background, see news release of Feb. 5, 1998, on the Web site of the New Orleans District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers: www.mvn.usace.army.mil
