SNAP Activities & Accomplishments
Training on Using Telecommunications Relay
Services
--NOD
employees received training on how to use the relay service to call the deaf
and hard-of-hearing. SNAP invited Henry Brinkman of the Louisiana Relay
Service, Baton Rouge, Louisiana to conduct two training

Making Accommodations Around the District
Over the years the SNAP has been instrumental in
making accommodations to improve access for and work performance of persons
with disabilities. This includes ramps, handrails, push doors, raised buttons
in elevators, and automatic front door entrance (in process). Accommodations
also include the use of interpreters and a captionist for the
hearing-impaired, and special procedures during emergency building evacuations
for employees with disabilities.
Getting to Know District
Employees and Celebrities with Disabilities
In celebration of
National Disability Employment Awareness Month October 2001, SNAP set up an
exhibit showcasing the successes of NOD employees and famous personalities
with disabilities (i.e. Heather Whitestone, Miss America 1995, Marlee Matlin,
Academy Award Winning Actress, Sarah Wills, Olympic Champion).
Challenge Day
A National Disability Employment Awareness Month activity,
October 2002--District employees had an opportunity to experience being
challenged with a disability for four hours of a day (Challenge Day Briefing
for Employees). (Riverside/Engineer Update Write-up). A display on the
employees' experiences was set up for viewing.
Training for
Managers on Reasonable Accommodations
A member of the Computer
Electronic/Accommodations Program (CAP) was invited from Washington DC to give
a two-hour presentation on "Reasonable Accommodations" to NOD and Federal
Executive Board (FEB) managers.
Reference Guide for Managers
& Supervisors:
Accommodating & Working with Persons with Disabilities
A 200-page guide on employing,
interviewing, accommodating, and communicating with persons with disabilities
was distributed to all NOD managers and supervisors.
