Harvey Canal Gates to close

Published Dec. 15, 2009

NEW ORLEANS – The Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-West has requested the New Orleans district close the sector gates due to heavy rain and southern winds increasing water levels in the Harvey Canal.

The gates take 8 - 10 minutes to close and, once closed, we can begin pumping water from the canal into the lake to maintain the water elevation of 2 ft.

A three person team located at the structure is responsible for operating the gates and pumps.

The Corps’ pumps have a maximum combined capacity of 750 cubic feet per second at the Harvey Ave. Canal.

We work closely with the Jefferson Parish Drainage Department to maximize their drainage capacity while ensuring public safety by maintaining the safe elevation of 2 feet.
