Contracts awarded for storm proofing in Jefferson, Orleans parishes

Published July 30, 2010

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently awarded two contracts to storm proof five pump stations in Orleans and Jefferson parishes so they can remain operable during and immediately following tropical storm events to support interior drainage and ensure public safety.

The Corps awarded a $7.2 million contract to DQSI, L.L.C, a Louisiana-based woman-owned small business, to storm proof the Elmwood and Cousins 1, 2 and 3 drainage pump stations in Jefferson Parish. Work will take approximately 12 months to complete from the date of notice to proceed. Elmwood is located on the Jefferson lakefront along Caryota Drive, while Cousins 1, 2 and 3 are located along the western edge of the Harvey Canal near Lapalco Boulevard.

The Corps also awarded a $16 million contract to Shavers-Whittle Construction, L.L.C., a Louisiana-based Historically Under-utilized Business Zone (HUBZone) small business, to storm proof Pump Station 7 in Orleans Parish. Work will take approximately 15 months to complete from the date of notice to proceed. Pump Station 7 is located at the southern end of the Orleans Avenue Canal.

Storm-proofing measures for the abovementioned projects consist of retrofitting or replacing existing roofs, strengthening and reinforcing walls, elevating equipment, providing hurricane-strength doors and windows, installing new generators, constructing a generator building, strengthening ventilation systems and other miscellaneous mechanical and electrical work.

“We have worked diligently to award six storm proofing contracts in the last four months,” said John Ashley, branch chief for existing pump stations. “These projects will greatly reduce the risk of storm-related flood damage in the greater New Orleans area.”
