Public meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010

NEW ORLEANS, LA – The Corps is hosting a public meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 4, at the St. Bernard Parish Council Chambers, 8201 W. Judge Perez Dr., in Chalmette, to provide an update on the status of risk reduction projects in St. Bernard Parish.

When complete, nearly 23 miles of floodwall will be constructed along the Chalmette Loop from Bayou Bienvenue in the northeastern corner of the parish to the juncture of the Caernarvon Canal and Highway 39 near the St. Bernard-Plaquemines parish line. This project is part of the perimeter system being built around the New Orleans metropolitan area that will defend against the risk of a storm surge from a storm that has a 1 percent chance of occurring in any given year.

“We will be constructing two miles of concrete and steel floodwall per month to meet our operational goal of finishing all key features of the Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System by June 2011,” said Chris Gilmore, project manager.

The meeting presentation will also address operation of the two new sector gates in St. Bernard, as well as the status of construction of the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal Surge Barrier at Lake Borgne.
