Port Allen Lock reduces hours

Published May 19, 2011

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Due to high water on the Mississippi River, Port Allen Lock will be closed to navigation between the hours of 6:30 p.m. through 6:30 a.m. beginning Wednesday evening, May 18.

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has closed the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) Alternative Route to navigation, and as a result, the Corps has limited the Port Allen Lock to daylight operations to better utilize resources.

To travel along the GIWW Alternative Route, vessels need to obtain special use permits from the USCG. Because of this limited travel, the Port Allen Lock expects to perform no more than two to three lockings per day.

The lock will re-open for 24-hour navigation once the USCG re-opens the GIWW Alternative Route, which is expected to occur when the Atchafalaya River recedes below 7.5 feet in Morgan City.

For the most current lock status information, please call the Port Allen Lock at (225) 343-3752, or check our website, http://www.mvn.usace.army.mil/od/lockupdates/statusindex.asp
