Corps awards Orleans Parish interior drainage contract Claiborne Avenue – Phase II

Published June 26, 2012

NEW ORLEANS -The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently awarded a contract to provide increased drainage for the Carrollton area with canal improvements along South Claiborne Avenue between Leonidas and Lowerline Streets.  The project, which is part of the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Damage Reduction Project (SELA), will reduce the risk of damages from a rainfall event that has a chance of occurring once in every ten years.

On June 20, the Corps awarded a $27.8 million contract to Louisiana-based B&K Construction Co, LLC.  The 46-month contract calls for constructing approximately 3,400 feet of covered canal, as well as completing minor electrical and water line relocations to accommodate the project.  The phase two project area is noted on the below map; a notice to proceed will be issued this month and construction will be completed in the spring of 2016.

The Corps will continue to work closely with its partners at the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority and the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans on the SELA program.  To date, a total of fourteen SELA contracts have been awarded in Orleans Parish, with work completed on 9 of those projects.  All scheduled SELA work in Orleans Parish should be finished in 2017.
