NEW ORLEANS, LA – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District and the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority of Louisiana will host the first of multiple public scoping meetings tonight to engage the public in the initiation of the “Louisiana Coastal Area - Mississippi River Hydrodynamic and Delta Management Study”.  This important study, authorized under Section 7003 of the Water Resource Development Act (WRDA) 2007, will identify and evaluate a combination of large-scale management and restoration features to address the long-term sustainability of the lower Mississippi River Delta.

Public scoping meetings will be held throughout Southeastern Louisiana and Mississippi to inform interested parties in the initiation of the study and Environmental Impact Statement, and provide the public with an opportunity to present issues and topics they feel the study should consider.  Each meeting will include an open house followed by a presentation on the study, an opportunity for questions and answers, and a formal scoping comment submission period.

The Mississippi River Hydrodynamic and Delta Management Study area covers the lower Mississippi River and surrounding deltaic regions, and is the first large-scale, long-term restoration assessment to be conducted under the LCA Program.  This study will provide a decision-making framework for the management of a sustainable coastal ecosystem that allows for the coexistence of navigation and flood control, while supporting the needs of Louisiana and the Nation.

Work on the study will be shared by the Corps of Engineers and the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority throughout the study.  For more information, please visit www.lca.gov.
