West Shore Lake Pontchartrain public meetings scheduled

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District scheduled two virtual public meetings to gather input for the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain project Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) that was released April 15 for a 45-day public review period.

The meetings will be conducted via WebEx and simultaneously streamed on the district’s Facebook page. The meeting dates and times are:

The proposed plan evaluates an alternative project to compensate for unavoidable impacts to swamp habitat associated with the construction of the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction Project.

The general public, interested parties, and stakeholders are invited to provide input on the proposed 2,000 cubic feet per second freshwater diversion from the Mississippi River into the Maurepas Swamp, which would provide benefits to existing swamp habitats and compensate for the WSLP project’s swamp impacts. The public comment period concludes on May 31, 2022.

Additionally, the SEIS includes a Clean Water Act, Section 404(b)(1) evaluation, addressed in Appendix L of the final report. The Corps is also seeking public comments on the 404(b)(1) evaluation through May 31, 2022.

The SEIS documents are prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and the Council of Environmental Quality Regulations.
